What is the Honours Bachelor of Commerce Program with Internship?
The BCom with Internship Program is an opportunity for business students to gain corporate work experience with an employer between their third and fourth year of studies. Work terms are 12 or 16 months in length beginning anytime between May and September.
Is there a fee to participate?
The fee for the Commerce 2IN0 – Career Development Course is $175. Upon securing a position, an administration fee of $1650 is applied in three installments of $550 throughout the internship terms. The student will also pay additional fees for the MSU Health and Dental coverage plan when on internship (refundable through the opt-out process offered in the Fall; minus an admin fee).
What are the advantages to participating in the BCom with Internship Program?
The experience students gain while on internship enhances skills to effectively market their brand to employers. Statistics indicate that students who have participated in experiential learning programs are more likely to be granted interviews by employers during graduate on-campus recruitment. Some returning interns are offered full-time employment prior to their final year of studies. All internships are paid opportunities. The average annual salary for participants is approximately $42,000 each year.
Are there any disadvantages?
Students may be required to move to a different city during the internship, depending on the company’s location.
Since internship increases the Commerce program duration by one full year, friends and peers who did not choose internship will have graduated before the intern is in the final year of study.
What is the Commerce 2IN0 Career Development Course?
Commerce 2IN0 is a mandatory 10-hour non-credit course that is a prerequisite for admission into the internship program. The course equips students with the skills to effectively transition from the classroom to the workplace.
How many students participate in Commerce 2IN0/BCom with Internship?
The Commerce 2IN0 – Career Development Course offers multiple sections in the Winter and Spring terms every year. Over 500 students elect to take Commerce 2IN0.
The BCom with Internship program conducts an admission process in the summer prior to Level 3. Selection into the program is based on academic achievement, statement of interest, work and volunteer experiences and interview which is reviewed by a committee.
How many jobs are available each year?
The number of positions varies each year depending on employer needs, changing market demand, and number of students enrolled. Typically, there are over 400 postings available each year.
How many students are successful in securing an internship each year?
The Career and Professional Development team continues to grow the internship program. Currently, over 250 students secure internships each year.
