Make sure to review the new MSAF Policy!
The McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF) is for missed academic work. There are 2 different types of MSAFs.
A new policy is coming into effect on September 1, 2023, with significant changes that all students must follow.
Students can read below to learn more about the different types of MSAFs. Changes from the previous policy are in bold.
1. MSAF Self-Report
- Can be submitted by students in Mosaic.
- Used for missed work valued at less than 25% per course, due to medical/ select personal absences lasting 3 days or less.
- NEW!! – May only be used once per term.
- NEW!! – Must be submitted within 24 hours of your return to class. Failure to do so may result in your MSAF being denied.
- NEW!! – Students must immediately follow up with their instructor(s) after submitting the request.
2. MSAF Administrative Report (MSAF-AR)
- A new process for absences of more than 3 days, but less than 2 weeks.
- Students must request this through their Faculty or Program Office within 24 hours of their return to class.
- Used for missed work valued at 25-35% per course or if the MSAF Self-Report has already been used that term.
- Supporting documentation may be required.
- NEW!! – You cannot MSAF more than 35% (per course) of coursework..
- NEW!! – For absences longer than 2 weeks, you will need to speak with an Academic Advisor.
- NEW!! – Students must immediately follow up with their instructor(s) after the request is approved.
Here’s what hasn’t changed:
- Instructors will determine appropriate relief for both types of MSAF requests.
- MSAFs cannot be used for work that has already been completed or attempted.
