Khaled Hassanein, Dean, DeGroote School of Business, shares his thoughts on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Dear students, staff, and faculty,

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This moment provides an important opportunity for all of us to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools in this country.

On Sept 30, McMaster’s Indigenous Studies Program, Indigenous Education Council (IEC) will host a commemorative event and an announcement on IEC work – both events will be accessible online. If you haven’t already done so, I ask that you spend a few moments today honouring survivors, their families, and communities by considering the impact of residential schools and the systems that created them.

I hope you will join me in reflecting on the tragic and painful legacy of residential schools today. Our commemoration of this period in Canadian history, and the education that hopefully follows, are vital components of the reconciliation process.
